Janine Wotton is an Associate Professor in the Physiological Science and Neuroscience departments at Gustavus Adolphous College where she uses the BioRadio Lab Course system to teach students about gait, motor control, and biomechanics. Among Janine’s eleven psychology courses, Intro to Neuroscience, Capstone in Neuroscience, and Neuroscience Lab contribute to the completion of the College’s Neuroscience minor program.
The Gustavus Neuroscience program gives sophomore and senior students the opportunity to work hands-on with digital signal acquisition and analysis tools and methods. The curriculum emphasizes mechanistic explanations of mental activity and shows the links to other sciences as well as arts and philosophy. The Neuroscience program provides students with a comprehensive skillset developed to support careers in psychology, biomedical engineering, neurobiology, and education, to name a few.
Sophomores in the program have benefitted from the simplified, chapter-driven lab experience of the Lab Course system while the program’s senior-level track works towards extending the capabilities of the BioRadio’s biomechanical system.

Research Engineer, SAR Lab

Yashodhan “Yash” Athavale works as a Research Engineer at Ryerson University and manages all the SAR-Industry partnered projects. His work involves algorithm development and project management. During his study at Ryerson he received a Best Student paper award for his research in intelligent stock market analysis.
The SAR Lab at Ryerson has been working with real world data samples like EEG from alcoholics, EMG data from children’s hospital, and pulse (blood) volume signals. Yash and his colleagues are using a BioRadio BioCapture system for the purposes of recording signals for developing algorithms to be used in biomedical signal processing. The goal of their research is to develop a health monitoring software suite that will highlight biophysiological signposts in the early identification of diseases such as alcoholism and autism.

At NCC Mr. Gallo serves a dual role as both the Director of the Fitness Leadership Program and Director of the college’s Wellness Center. Besides his teaching and administrative duties, Mr. Gallo can also administer graded exercise tests and body composition evaluations, design injury rehabilitation programs, and consult and educate NCC patrons on exercise. At NCC, Mr. Gallo teaches Introduction to Fitness (HPE 105), Specificity Training (HPE 245), and Introduction to Nutrition (BIO 111).
The Exercise Science program is designed to provide fundamental and theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills necessary to assume the role of a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, or health fitness professional. With an emphasis on exercise science and health, the program integrates cutting edge research with fundamental theories of learning and basic clinical skills. Students will be prepared for a career in health fitness and will receive an educational background that will provide opportunities for further education leading to careers in exercise physiology and allied health. Successful completion of the program leads to the Associates in Science Degree and prepares the student to sit for National Certification Exams.
